7 Effective Practices Make Travelers Pro Golf Tournament A Success

Recently, sportscaster Ann Liguori interviewed Nathan Grube, Tournament Director, Travelers Championship about what Ann described as “one of the best organized tournaments on the PGA Tour.” The interview aired on Ann’s Saturday morning show, “Sports Innerview With Ann Liguori,” on www.peconicpublicbroadcasting.org -- heard globally...
The Travelers Championship takes place at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, June 18-24, 2012.
Based on Ann’s discussion with Nathan, below are 7 effective practices that (when taken together) make the Travelers Championship a perennial success.
1. Year-Long Effort
Nine people work year-round to manage every detail of this professional golf tournament.
2. Race To Get Into Companies’ Budgets And Renewals
Five-hundred companies support the tournament and help benefit 120 charities
3. Draw Fans From Two Major Markets
Located in the corridor between Boston and New York , the tournament pulls from both markets.
4. Stadium-Type Atmosphere
By way of example, fans can watch 4 holes of golf from one spectator-friendly location on the the TPC River Highlands course.
5. Distinction As The Only Summer PGA Tour Event In New England
Well positioned to draw vacation travelers from both the Boston and New York Metropolitan markets as the Deutsche Bank Championship, which is part of the Fedex Cup, doesn’t take place until early September.
6. Family-Friendly Venue
Turned old driving range into a fan zone for concerts, miniature golf and more. Kids 15 and under attend for free.
7.Strong Field With Global Players
Nathan and his team do a multitude of things to recruit players. Among them are providing a free charter plane for players competing in the U.S. Open which takes place the week before the Travelers. So this year, the plane will leave from San Francisco to an airport in Connecticut where courtesy cars can be accessed by the players right on the tarmac.
In addition, the course’s new practice facility is made available to players and their coaches early in the week. And the players’ caddies are given complimentary yardage books and weather-proof jackets.
This year’s field includes pro golf players Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Hunter Mahan; young talent Patrick Cantlay and reigning U.S. Amateur Champion Kelley Craft. The tournament also resonates with European players such as Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter as well as South African players Charles Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen.
